A new approach to choosing primary care

At Moda Health, we’re refreshing the way we think about primary care. Traditionally, the first step when enrolling in a health plan was choosing a single primary care provider (PCP). Today, we encourage you to select a primary care location instead.

Why the shift? Because building a lasting relationship with a full care team – not just one doctor – leads to better, more consistent care over time. When your primary care provider is a medical practice or clinic, you’ll have access to a team of providers who know your history, understand your preferences and work together to help you stay healthy.

When to choose primary care

Some people wait until they get sick to choose a PCP. But without an established relationship, it can be harder to get timely care when you need it most. That’s why we recommend scheduling a check-up with a primary care location while you’re feeling well.

Getting to know your care team early helps them understand your health baseline, so they’re more likely to catch subtle changes before they become bigger issues. It also makes it easier to get preventive care tailored to you, and to get faster, more convenient treatment when unexpected illness strikes. That can mean fewer trips to urgent care or the ER, saving you time, stress and money.

Choosing your primary care team

Our digital tools make finding your care team simple. Use the “Find Care” feature in your Member Dashboard to search for in-network providers and clinics. You can filter by location or specialty, and compare provider details — including language preferences, affiliations and hospital connections.

Prefer one-on-one help? Our Customer Service team is here for you. They’ll identify your network, help you narrow down your options and assign your chosen primary care location to your account. All you have to do is call the provider and schedule your first appointment.

If you’ve never used your health insurance or chosen a primary care provider, here’s one thing to remember: building a relationship with a care team now is one of the most important steps you can take for your long-term health.

If your preferred provider isn’t in network, you can nominate them. The Moda Health Medical Professional Relations team will reach out and walk them through the process of becoming a part of our network.
