Upper endoscopy, also called esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure that uses a lighted, flexible endoscope to see inside the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The upper GI tract includes the esophagus, stomach and duodenum — the first part of the small intestine.
